Importance of schema theory in reading
WitrynaSchema theory is based on the notion that past experiences lead to the creation of mental frameworks that help a reader make sense of new experiences. Smith (1994: 14) calls schemes the “extensive representations of more general patterns or regularities that occur in our experience”. WitrynaAll readers carry differen schemata (background information) and these are also often culture-specific. This is an important concept in ESL teaching, and prereading tasks are oft designed to build or activate the learner's schemata. This journal encapsulates several of the research into schema theory and its applications to ESL reading.
